Meet Colin, another YouTubing sailor who has a few claims to fame, among them being his time spent as a crew member on the popular yachting TV Show, Below Deck. His other brush with fame is still a weekly event as he releases videos on his popular sailing YouTube channel, Sailing Parlay Revival. Colin spent his life savings from a 10-year career as a Superyacht engineer, to buy a hurricane-damaged 2012 Lagoon 450 catamaran. Back in October, the TotalBoat crew met Colin at the Annapolis Boat Show and discussed which TotalBoat products he could use for his extensive ongoing boat repairs. We set him up with some products to fix up Parlay’s broken bulkheads, the hull, and the bottom and in this video, he shares his step-by-step process.
To prep the hull, Colin first used 80 grit sandpaper to allow for an even application. The weather in Panama, where Colin is working on the hull, wasn’t ideal for applying epoxy primer and bottom paint so he and his team got creative in taping plastic sheeting above the waterline to protect the soon-to-be painted area. Before applying TotalBoat TotalProtect Epoxy Barrier Coat Primer, Colin used TotalBoat Dewaxer and Surface Prep Solvent to clean the sanded surface and remove any contaminants that could be ruinous to his barrier coat paint job. The barrier coat application is really important in helping to prevent blisters and give the Antifouling paint an ideal surface to bond to. Colin and his team applied two coats of TotalProtect, alternating colors from white to gray for the best coverage. After letting that dry, the team painted with TotalBoat Spartan Multi-Season Ablative Antifouling Paint. The Spartan bottom paint is a great choice for the Lagoon 450 catamaran because it will last multiple years and can stand up to the growth of the tropics.
