Spartan’s high copper content and ablative, self-polishing nature combine to shed slime and shield your boat’s bottom from hard and soft growth like zebra mussels, algae, and hydroids all season long. The more coats you apply, the longer Spartan repels even the most aggressive foulants.
Burnishing adds smoothness and speed with no loss of protection
Spartan Antifouling Paint is easy to apply with a roller or brush, flows evenly, and cures quickly to a streamlined, abrasion-resistant finish made even smoother by burnishing. And Spartan won’t wear off faster just because your boat moves faster through the water. Its advanced co-polymer ablative formula releases biocides at the same constant, controlled rate no matter how fast or slow you go.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
-
What can Spartan Multi-Season Antifouling Bottom Paint be used on?
It can be used on wood fiberglass, steel, or iron (surface must be prepared and primed with TotalBoat TotalProtect prior to applying TotalBoat Spartan), and previously painted surfaces (do not apply over tin, vinyl, or Teflon® bottom paint).
Do not use on aluminum hulls. For aluminum and underwater metals, see TotalBoat Krypton and Alumipaint AF copper-free bottom paints -
Can TotalBoat Spartan be applied over other paints?
Yes, Spartan can be applied over nearly all existing bottom paints (aside from tin, vinyl, or paints containing Teflon®), as long as they are in good condition. Remove any loose, flaking paint, sand with 80 grit, wipe the surface with TotalBoat Special Brushing Thinner 100, and apply paint. Paints in poor condition should be removed completely before applying Spartan. -
Can Spartan Antifouling Paint be applied directly to bare gelcoat?
If the boat is going to be kept in the water, applying a barrier coat primer like TotalProtect is a good idea in order to prevent future issues with gelcoat blistering. -
Can I use Spartan above the waterline?
No, Spartan Antifouling Paint is meant to be used below the waterline only. It does not contain UV resistance and is an ablative finish designed to wear away with use, constantly exposing fresh biocide. -
How soon can I paint after applying TotalProtect or other epoxy primers?
Wait 24 hrs after the last coat of primer, then apply bottom paint. -
What is the coverage per gallon?
The coverage of Spartan is 500 sq. ft. per gallon. -
How much paint do I need for my boat?
The best way to estimate how much paint you’ll need is to calculate the approximate surface area of the hull below the waterline, in square feet. Multiply boat length X beam X 0.85. -
Do you need to thin this paint?
No, Spartan does not require thinning, but adding a maximum of 5-10% (6-12 oz. per gallon) of TotalBoat Special Brushing Thinner 100 for brush/roller application, or up to 10% (12 ounces of thinner per gallon) of TotalBoat Spray Thinner 101 for spray applications, can help create the smoothest possible finish. -
How many coats of Spartan do I need to apply?
Apply 1-2 coats for maximum antifouling protection. An additional coat over bare substrates, around the waterline, and areas with increased wear (like leading edges of keels, skegs, rudders etc) is always a good idea with ablative antifoulings. -
What is the dry time before applying an additional coat of paint?
The dry time to overcoat is 1.5 hours at 90ºF, 3 hours at 70º, or 6 hours at 50ºF. -
What is the dry time before launching?
Dry time to launch will be dependent on temperature: 6 hours at 90°F, 10 hours at 70°F, or 16 hours at 50°F. There is no maximum time to launch. You can paint your boat with Spartan in the fall and launch in the spring. -
Can you haul and relaunch boats painted with Spartan without repainting?
Yes, you can haul boats with Spartan bottom paint and relaunch without repainting, but if 2 weeks have passed since the boat was hauled, the surface will have to be scuffed to expose new paint before relaunching, as the copper in the paint forms a patina and oxidizes while it sits outside of the water.
