Building A Fiberglass Shower Pan

When woodworker Andy Rawls reached out to ask for some advice on how to build a shower pan for his Airstream, we knew of just the video to have him study. Just months prior, we helped Steve and Annie from Acorn to Arabella do exactly the same thing for Arabella, the boat he’s building in his backyard, and the video proved to be helpful to Andy as he studied up on how to fiberglass. Making a waterproof shower base that can hold up to standing water, standing inside of it, and years of family use on the road meant that fiberglass would be the ideal material for this kind of build again. One hurdle was that Andy had never used fiberglass before and if you have, you understand how intimidating it can be for beginners.

Andy does an expert job of cutting the glass and wetting it out with our High Performance Epoxy Resin which will seal and waterproof the piece. Adding epoxy to all the end grain, to the drain hole area, and also to the back will ensure that it stays waterproof for years, as well. Andy struggles with the peel ply which might have done some of the fiberglass smoothing for him, so instead, he uses TotalFair to fill and fair out the weave of the very rugged 12oz biaxial cloth that he used for most of the project. Tune in to the video of the week and see how Andy pulls off this intimidating project.
