If you’re logging serious hours constructing a kayak, stripper canoe, or stitch-and-glue pram — and making it absolutely perfect in all its wood-grainy glory — don’t ruin all your hard work by finishing it wrong. Choose an epoxy/hardener combo that’ll really show off the natural beauty of your floating wooden wonder.
TotalBoat Crystal Clear Epoxy Kits are the clearest choice for making real wood look real good or showcasing the cool factor of carbon fiber fabrics. For coating applications, this crystal clear formula flows out and self-levels to penetrate and seal the wood, which helps prevent rot and hairline cracks in the grain (aka checking).
For layups, it wets out fiberglass and carbon fiber fabrics easily, requires less resin to fill the weave, and won’t turn cloudy or leave any messy blush to remove. It cures to a high-strength, moisture-resistant, exceptionally clear solid ready to finish with varnish or clear topcoats.
Enhance and extend the protection of clear finishes
A quality, UV-filtering varnish is good at protecting wood from sun damage, but by itself fails at keeping out moisture. It also has trouble adhering to wood that expands and contracts with seasonal changes in temperature and humidity. Eventually, the varnish will crack, look bad, and allow moisture and UV light to penetrate and do damage.
Apply Crystal Clear Epoxy to brightwork before varnishing or clear coating. It creates an effective moisture barrier, won’t shrink when it cures, and provides a stable base for the varnish to cling to so it’s no longer at the mercy of shifty wood. It also contains UV inhibitors that boost the UV protection of varnish and clear topcoats so they look better and don’t need to be maintained as often.
Get the glossy shine and UV protection of 8-12 coats of varnish on your brightwork — in less than half the time
Applying 12 coats of varnish on brightwork is a monumental task that can easily take three weeks or more — and that’s IF the weather cooperates.
For a shortcut that gives you the same look and UV protection, use Crystal Clear Epoxy instead of varnish for the buildup coats. You can get the buildup coats done in a single day, with 1 to 2 hours between coats. The next day, sand, wipe clean, and you’re ready to varnish. You’ll only need about three coats of a quality, UV-filtering varnish on top of the solid, Crystal Clear Epoxy base.
Get the job done in less than a week. And because the epoxy enhances the protection of any UV-blocking varnish and provides a stable base for it, the finish will last longer before you have to do any maintenance on it. Less labor, less varnish, and less maintenance in the long run. More time to enjoy your beautiful boat.

Two ways to measure
- By Volume: Measure THREE parts TotalBoat Traditional Epoxy Resin to ONE part TotalBoat Crystal Clear Hardener
- By Pumps: Use the TotalBoat 3:1 Epoxy Pumps (sold separately) to dispense the resin and hardener in the precise proportions, by volume. All you have to do is apply one full stroke of the hardener pump for every one full stroke of the resin pump. The 3:1 mix ratio is preset and is required for a proper cure.
- By Weight: Measure 100A:27B
After measuring, just give the mix a good stir for about two minutes to combine thoroughly before adding fillers or applying.
Important Safety Information

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
-
How does this 3:1 epoxy system compare to other TotalBoat epoxy systems?
Crystal Clear was originally developed back when TotalBoat offered only a 5:1 epoxy system. Our Crystal Clear Hardener is designed for use with our Traditional resin to provide a somewhat UV-resistant, non-blushing, clearer alternative to 5:1 systems, especially for laminating and coating applications such as wooden boat and kayak builds. Use on bare wood to reduce the number of varnish coats required to achieve professional finishes. -
Why does the resin bottle say 5:1?
We know it’s a bit confusing! The Crystal Clear Hardener is used in a 3:1 (that is, 3 parts resin to 1 part hardener) ratio with our Traditional 5:1 ratio. -
Does it have UV protection?
While Crystal Clear contains UV inhibiting additives, any project exposed to UV rays should be coated with varnish or polyurethane to prevent yellowing, checking, and chalking. This goes for both outdoor projects, and for interior use with indirect sunlight. -
Is the cured finish clear?
While it cures more clearly than 5:1, for the clearest possible finish, we recommend TotalBoat High Performance 2:1 Epoxy. -
Can you apply this epoxy over existing varnish?
No, remove the varnish first. This epoxy should be applied under varnish to seal and stabilize bare wood and eliminate varnish finish checking or rot. When used on bare wood, it reduces the number of varnish coats required. -
Can it be thinned for use as a sealer coat?
We do not recommend thinning Crystal Clear Epoxy. For sealing wood, we recommend TotalBoat Penetrating Epoxy. Crystal Clear (or any other TotalBoat epoxy system) may be applied over wood sealed with penetrating epoxy. -
Can this epoxy be tinted or pigmented?
Yes. Crystal Clear epoxy is compatible with alcohol inks, mica powder pigments, and opaque liquid pigments. -
Can you buff the cured epoxy to create a high gloss finish?
You can sand it smooth and wet sand it with fine paper and then buff. It will have a little bit of shine, but may not be a real high gloss finish. -
Can I use this on my canoe?
Yes, this non-blushing marine epoxy system is perfect for wooden boats, canoes, or kayak building. -
Can you fill holes, knots, and voids with this epoxy?
Yes. However, Crystal Clear will have a viscosity higher than TotalBoat 2:1 High Performance or Penetrating Epoxy. You may find a thinner epoxy easier to use for such applications. -
How long does it take for it to cure?
Crystal Clear Epoxy will be fully cured in 2-4 days at 75°F. -
How many pumps of epoxy do I need? Is it 3 pumps resin for every pump of hardener?
Pumps are pre-calibrated to work properly with each other. All you need to do is apply one full stroke of the hardener pump for every one full stroke of the resin pump. -
How can I measure the epoxy?
There are three ways you can measure it. You can use the calibrated pumps, you can measure it by volume (three parts TotalBoat Epoxy Resin to one part Crystal Clear Hardener, or by weight (measure 100A:27B). Note: the mix ratio is different from Traditional 5:1 TotalBoat Fast and Slow Hardeners. -
What is the shelf life?
If stored properly, it can last up to a year.
